Barclays Cycle Superhighways About the Scheme

What are Barclays Cycle Superhighways?

Barclays Cycle Superhighways are new cycle lanes that run into central London from outer London to provide cyclists with safer, faster and more direct journeys into the city - perfect for your staff to use for their commute to work! Using the Superhighways for business trips also means reduced costs associated with business travel.

What is the Barclays Cycle Superhighways Workplace Scheme?

In order to support cyclists using the highways to and from work, TfL is offering businesses along the Barclays Cycle Superhighways funding credits which can be exchanged for a wide range of cycle parking, cycle training for staff and cycle safety check sessions on site with a qualified mechanic.  If your organisation is:

  • - located within 1.5km of a Superhighway route,
  • - has a minimum of 50 employees and
  • - has not had a planning requirement to provide cycle facilities or develop a travel plan since April 2008

you are eligible to receive cycling facilities and support.  If you're unsure, email us to check if you're eligible - we'll need to know the postcode of your workplace and the number of staff based on site (this can include volunteers, temps and contractors).

How much funding could I receive?

Funding credits available per business site range from £1070 worth to £9330 depending on the number of employees at the site.  Check with us how many credits you are eligible for if you are unsure.

If I'm eligible, what do I need to do to access my funding credits?

Stage 1:  Sign up online.  The details you provide will be used to check your eligibility.  If you're eligible, you'll receive an email with details of the next stage.

Stage 2: Sign the agreement and de-minimis declaration (these documents will be made available via your online account if you business becomes eligible).  This is to enable TfL to allocate funding credits to your business and details what we expect from you and what you can expect from TfL in return.

Stage 3: The next stage is to complete an online travel survey with your staff.  The survey is very short - just 5 questions and will require you to email staff a web link to the survey. As detailed in the agreement (Stage 2), we require a 30% response rate from staff before your funding credits can be released.  You can use these to buy goods and services from the range available.  Guidance and support are always available from the Cycle Superhighways Team - we do our utmost to help you through this stage so don't worry!

Stage 4: Your funding credits are released and you are now able to exchange them for cycling related goods and services for your workplace.  To spend your allocated credits, visit the online shop, add your chosen items 'to basket' then check out using your credits - simple!  Once we receive your order, we forward this to our pre-selected suppliers who will then deliver to a date and time that suits you. Guidance is available from the Cycle Superhighways Team and via your online toolkit if you're not sure what to purchase.

Stage 5: In a years' time, the team will ask you to re-survey your staff.  This is for our benefit - to see if funding workplaces in this way is having an affect on increasing cycling

What is available to my business as part of the scheme?

Visit the online shop to see the full range available and each item's equivalent cost in credits.  There's a wide range of cycle parking* (from basic Sheffield Stands to 20-bike cycle compounds), cycle training for staff at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and cycle safety checks with a qualified mechanic on site at your workplace.

We are also pleased to announce that every business taking part is eligible for an on-site session bike marking session with the Cycle Security Task Force.  This dedicated Police team will come on site and mark staff bicycles so that in the event they are stolen, they are far more likely to make it back to their real owner if recovered.

*The business will be responsible for installation costs.

The scheme is completely free to take part in, but is available for a limited time only in your area - don't miss out!
